Northern Lights forecast expects increased visibility across Iceland

Increased Northern Lights activity is expected over the next coming months across Iceland, according to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

As stated on its website, the Northern Lights forecast predicts that Iceland will be amongst the highest in active aurora forms, meaning an increase in the breathtaking light shows.

Scientists confirm increased Northern Lights activity across Iceland

It has been confirmed by scientists that the visibility of the Northern Lights in Iceland is to grow between August and September as a result of increasing solar activity.

Scientists have revealed that growing levels of gas particles caused by a ‘solar tsunami’ from the sun have been mixing with the magnetic field surrounding the Earth. The sun’s own magnetic fields have been dragging open and snapping back the Earth’s magnetic field, creating a continuous loop around the planet, which then produces electrical currents that react with the gases in our atmosphere, ultimately causing them to glow. These purple, blue, red and green colours are known as the Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis.

Four direct flights from Seattle to Reykjavik a week with Icelandair

Icelandair, Iceland’s flagship airline, is offering four direct flights a week from Seattle’s Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Keflavik International Airport.

These scheduled direct flights are departing every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, at 16:30 from Seattle, and are set to arrive in Keflavik at 06.45. The flights from Seattle will then connect with Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and London, offering up to 4 hours faster connection times from Seattle to Scandinavia than possible through other European hubs. Flights to Helsinki, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris will also be available via Reykjavik.

Iceland announced as top travel destination by Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet recently announced Iceland as one of its ‘Perfect Trips for 2010’, encouraging travellers to visit this summer. According to Lonely Planet’s January issue of its monthly magazine, ‘there really has never been a better time’ to visit Iceland as prices are more affordable than ever with the current exchange rate. Also, Iceland flights have resumed to normal after the ceasing of the Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption.

The global travel guide and digital media publisher recommends taking a road trip to the hot springs and pastel mountains of Landmannalaugar, a geothermal area in the southern highland and taking a boat ride around the magnificent Vestmannaeyjar islands to see thousands of puffin chicks take flight.
