Eyelid surgery discussed by New York City plastic surgeon

New York-based cosmetic plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Guida offers patients blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, a procedure which millions of patients look to each year  to turn back the hands of time. One of the most common places to show aging on the face is around the eyes, since the skin around the eyelids is extremely thin. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, removes the excess skin and wrinkles around the eyes which gives patients an aged look.

While this procedure is commonly performed for cosmetic reasons, Dr. Guida notes that the surgery also serves a more practical purpose, since any excess skin hanging around the eyes can obscure vision, which can be extremely dangerous.

Dr. Guida explains that upper eyelid blepharoplasty involves making an incision in the natural fold of the eyelid. This will correct both the looseness of the skin around the eyelids and the “puffed-up” look of the lids produced by projections of fatty tissues beneath the eyelid muscle. Lower eyelid blepharoplasty targets “bags” under the eyelids. For this procedure, Dr. Guida uses a technique called “transconjunctival blepharoplasty,” which removes excess fat through the inner eyelid avoiding the need for an incision on the outer skin. Both surgeries leave patients with a more refreshed, youthful appearance.

Dr. Guida says that there is a very short recovery period associated with this procedure. Most patients are able to return to their normal activities just a few days after surgery. He also notes that there is no visible scarring following blepharoplasty.

According to Dr. Guida, not everyone is considered a good candidate for blepharoplasty. He says that the best candidates are adult men and women, who are in good physical health and do not smoke. Individuals with serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma or dry eye, are not considered suitable candidates for the surgery since these eye conditions can hinder the healing process. Finally, Dr. Guida says that all patients must have realistic expectations about what this surgery can do for them.

Dr. Guida encourages anyone interested in blepharoplasty, or any other plastic surgery procedure, to contact his offices at 212-871-0900 or www.drguida.com.
