Iceland’s greatest sights easily accessible with self drive tours

Iceland’s greatest sights can be found via the main highway, Route One, which means that self drive tours are an excellent way to explore the country’s most loved landmarks.

Just off Route One, which forms a 1335 km circle inside of Iceland, some incredible sights can be explored, such as the Skaftafell National Park, Jokulsarlon, Seljalandsfoss, and the town Neskaupstadur.

Iceland’s Skaftafell National Park, in the south east of the country, is known for its wonderful landscape and waterfalls, such as the Svartifoss waterfall, which is built up of basalt columns. Most famously, the area is home to Europe’s largest glacier Vatnajokull, and glacial lagoon Jokulsarlon. The lagoon offers boat rides for the whole family, where you can find icebergs and the occasional seal.

Seljalandsfoss is the only waterfall of its kind, whereby you can walk behind it and see it for this unique angle. The waterfall is a run off from the Seljalandsa river and drops 60 metres over the cliffs of the former coastline.

Neskaupstadur is a town located on the eastern side of the country, and is home to roughly 1400 people. There is a museum located within the picturesque town and houses an art gallery, a natural history museum, and a sea museum all under one roof.

For travellers looking to explore Iceland’s greatest sights on their own via self drive tours, RED Car Rental offers a range of 2014 car models, from small economy cars to high-end luxury vehicles.

Additionally, RED’s customers can pick up their vehicles from either Keflavik International Airport or the BSI bus terminal in Reykjavik. If the latter is preferred, RED will provide its customers with a free return ticket on the Flybus airport shuttle to and from the airport.
