Brief Encounter explores intensification of social exchanges

July 15th, 2009 Jarrett No comments

chairsBrief Encounter explores the intensification and acceleration of social exchanges and activities across world-time and space-time.

Hutchinson’s drawings and video work confront this situation by offering a crucible where heterogeneous forms of sociability are worked out through a dynamic network of forms – before, during and after production. Following the receding perspectives of history and geography, lines are traced in a globalized space that extends to time: history, the last continent to be explored, is traversed like a territory. The work references future events according to a system of cognitive logic, presented as a kind of fake archeological re-enactment – relics whose historical placing remains unclear.

‘Sweet FA’ presents five recent post-graduates from Wimbledon College of Art. Within their work, each artist independently considers and explores the notion of viewer recognition with the ensuing concept of comprehension. Yet the exciting diversity of these five artists arises from their thematic and technical juxtapositions.

Saffa Barkhordar’s work is derived from a collection of decorative objects and elements from nature that she merges together to create an imagined world. Natural sources, such as flora, fauna and fungi are entwined and repeated. These motifs organically grow, multiplying across the paper’s surface to form something distinct, unknown and strange. Michael Arkk, Singer, Songwriter, Producer and Poet, delivers a powerfully charged show every time he performs. His songs, his poetry are of unusual depth. He started singing from his early teens in his native country Jamaica and has travelled around the world delivering his unique blend of music and poetry.
Brought up in Jamaica in the church where his Dad was a minister Arkk was influenced by gospel singers mostly from America such as Mahalia Jackson, The Five Blind Boys from Alabama, Jim Reeves, Sam Cook, Elvis Presley, Shirley Cesar, and many others. Reggae music was not very welcomed in the family home, but Arkk has always loved roots reggae. As a musician he has drawn from a wide range of artists in the creation of his music.
The move finally came in 1987 and a whole new path began. Arkk was the first of his brothers to arrive in England.
His performances had rave reviews and after a while, through Arkk’s influence his brothers were invited to join him.
Before long, they were touring England, France, and Germany and many other places, sharing stages with many internationally recognised choirs, soloists and musicians from all over the world. Arkk’s solo career began in when the band Mystic Circle, later known as Channel Of Praise, ended. He began working on his latest album which is a classic work of art, an embodiment of his feelings, ideas and his emotions.
After the release of his album ‘Easier Said’ (2006) he returns to the stage at Red Gate Gallery. An evening that should not be missed!

An exhibition of drawing & collage works by German artist Harald Winter

March 24th, 2009 ARienstra No comments

Private View: Saturday 2nd of May 2009 – 6 pm to 11 pm
Exhibition runs from: Friday 1st to 21st of May 2009
Gallery Opening Hours: Fri, Sat, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs: 2.30 pm – 6.30 pm

Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 21st of May: 11.00am to 5.00pm

The German expression “Drunter und drüber”, which we might best understand as ‘topsy-turvy’, is possibly the most fitting description of the work of Harald Winter. Literally translated this phrase means “under and over”; things randomly scattered, lying around, on top of, and underneath all sorts of other items. Figuratively speaking, the expression refers to a state of disorder and confusion – two ideas which describe not only the character, but also the style of the works displayed in this forthcoming exhibition.

The present style of Harald’s work emerged accidentally when a particular doodle spilled over the page and had to be completed with two additional sheets. Retaining the border-defying spirit of this first drawing, Winter allows himself to be guided by no particular predetermined subject, letting memories and playful streams of consciousness find their own way across the space.
