April 27th, 2009 AElliott No comments

Pete Townshend’s legendary rock opera Quadrophenia
is brought to the stage for the first time and appears at the Festival Theatre, Edinburgh from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 May as part of a UK tour.

Set in London and Brighton at the height of the Mod era, Quadrophenia is told through the eyes of Jimmy, a hedonistic style conscious teenager searching for a place to belong and a girl to love. Misunderstood by his parents and stuck in a dead end job, he sets off on a trip to Brighton that will change his life forever.

The compelling coming of age story is brought to life in this original stage adaptation of the legendary album. The evocative world of sixties Britain provides a colourful backdrop to Jimmy’s journey. Pete Townshend’s score captures the excitement of a nation on the brink of change.

Quadrophenia documents a culturally significant moment in Britain, the influences of which are still seen today in music and fashion. The story takes a snapshot of one of the most interesting and energising times for pop culture in Britain. Read more…

March 30th, 2009 Luna No comments

What do you do when you turn 50 and find that no one is making feature films for you anymore? Yvonne Deutschman, Ann Cameron and Thereza Snyman decided they’d make a film for themselves. Filming on their low budget feature, The Power of 3, begins in April and will be premiered in London in the Autumn.

Back in 2004 Canadian Ann Cameron, British Director Yvonne Deutschman and South African entrepreneur Thereza Snyman discussed the fact that no-one was making movies for older female audiences

“We realised that no one was making movies for people like us” – Error! Reference source not found. says “so the inevitable question was – what are we going to do about it?”

They turned an original idea into a script, while Yvonne started canvassing support amongst her contacts in the UK. “It was really exciting to talk to people about our concept” says Yvonne. “Women immediately related to the story, became excited about our idea and started asking how they could be involved.“ Read more…

An exhibition of drawing & collage works by German artist Harald Winter

March 24th, 2009 ARienstra No comments

Private View: Saturday 2nd of May 2009 – 6 pm to 11 pm
Exhibition runs from: Friday 1st to 21st of May 2009
Gallery Opening Hours: Fri, Sat, Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs: 2.30 pm – 6.30 pm

Last day of Exhibition: Thurs 21st of May: 11.00am to 5.00pm

The German expression “Drunter und drüber”, which we might best understand as ‘topsy-turvy’, is possibly the most fitting description of the work of Harald Winter. Literally translated this phrase means “under and over”; things randomly scattered, lying around, on top of, and underneath all sorts of other items. Figuratively speaking, the expression refers to a state of disorder and confusion – two ideas which describe not only the character, but also the style of the works displayed in this forthcoming exhibition.

The present style of Harald’s work emerged accidentally when a particular doodle spilled over the page and had to be completed with two additional sheets. Retaining the border-defying spirit of this first drawing, Winter allows himself to be guided by no particular predetermined subject, letting memories and playful streams of consciousness find their own way across the space. Their vision focuses on the examination of the tiniest gesture being reflected within the biggest of conventions and visa versa:
