Iceland events calendar reaches climax

Rahman collaborating with UK’s Middlesex University to blend Asian-Western music

Oscar winner musician A. R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Middlesex University of United Kingdom (UK), focusing on blending Asian and Western music styles.

With this MOU between A.R. Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory in Chennai (India) and Middlesex University, both the organizations agreed to explore the possibilities for collaboration in music and education and it aims at educational collaboration between India and UK. Both the institutions are reportedly looking at offering a collaborative three year music program. Rahman has also been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree by this University. Read more…

Hindus and Jews have hailed Warwickshire Police of United Kingdom for organizing first “Family Day of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History and Culture”, to be held on June 27.

Rajan Zed, acclaimed Hindu statesman; and Rabbi Jonathan B. Freirich, prominent Jewish leader in Nevada and California in USA; in a statement in Nevada today, said that this might appear to be a small step but it was a big step forward for the British society as Roma-Traveller-Gypsy communities had been living in apartheid like conditions for many centuries in Europe. Iceland celebrates Festival of the Sea this weekend

seamans-day-iceland-01This weekend towns across Iceland will celebrate Seamen’s Day with festivals and fun events for all the family. In the Reykjavik capital region, the Seamen’s Day celebrations are called the Festival of the Sea.

One of Iceland’s biggest Seamen’s Day celebrations takes place in the south western town of Grindavik, where the four day-long programme of events includes art exhibitions, fairground rides, competitions and live music – including Bubbi Morthens and Friends, one of Iceland’s most loved musicians. Each particular instant in time is tied down, strung together by registering and mark-making; attempting to evoke as well as echo connections between people, places and time with the artists’ intricately crafted pieces.

Recent graduates of Camberwell College of Art, Lora Haynes’ and Paula McGurdy’s work conveys a sense of revisiting personal narratives by capturing fleeting moments in life. Both artists endeavour to render these permanent through the use of stitching and drawing. Utilising materials with feminine connotations such as thread and wool, both employ these materials to generate labour intensive, almost painstaking creations. The new body of work in this show examines a wide range of themes from stringing together connections and memory to the bond people form between one another and their surroundings. Read more…
