The perfect Valentine’s gift for the freshly – or terminally – single
As the rallying cry of ‘I hate Valentine’s Day’ gets louder, singles now have a book to comfort them through February 14 and beyond: The Dating Detox by Gemma Burgess.
Compared to High Fidelity and Bridget Jones by Vanity Fair (VF Daily, January 2010), The Dating Detox is the ultimate anti-romantic gift for any singleton this Valentine’s Day. Read more…
New ‘anti-romantic novel’ chicklit author is interviewed by Vanity Fair on VF Daily. In an exclusive Q&A for Vanity Fair’s VF Daily blog, Gemma Burgess talks about the importance of comedy and her new post-recession heroine.
“For those waiting to option the next Bridget Jones, Gemma Burgess answers back with her anti-romantic novel The Dating Detox (HarperCollins UK). Burgess’s heroine, 28-year-old Sass, is no chain-smoking, binge-eating fashion victim like Bridget. Although Sass does suffer severe hangovers, she cleans up well—shaves both legs simultaneously, dresses like one of Rachel Zoe’s girls, and woos her advertising-agency comrades while she’s still drunk from the night before.” (c) VF Daily, Lauren Sozio
The Dating Detox is the first chicklit book to recognise that for the post-Bridget Jones, post-Carrie Bradshaw, post-credit crunch generation of singles, life isn’t a beautiful, a bitch or a beach. It’s a party. Read more…
Press Release – Reykjavik 05.01.201: The President of Iceland has declined to sign a law authorising a state guarantee for repayment of loans provided by the UK and the Netherlands to the Depositors‘ and Investors‘ Guarantee Fund, intended to cover payment of the minimum deposit guarantees to depositors in the UK and Netherlands branches of the failed Landsbanki Íslands hf. The law was approved by Althing, the Icelandic Parliament, on 30 December 2009. According to the constitution, the President’s decision not to sign the law requires it to be put to general referendum as soon as possible where it needs to be supported by a simple majority of voters in order to remain in force. In the interim, the law enters into force as passed by the Althingi. The Government will now reflect on the decision of the President and review the situation. Read more…

Launching just in time for New Year’s resolutions, The Dating Detox is the perfect antidote to romance overkill.
The plot: after being dumped for the sixth time in a row, romantically-challenged heroine Sass declares a dating sabbatical. No men, no break-ups, no problem. The result: instant happiness. A love-free life is stress-free, too. Celibacy rocks. No wonder nuns are always singing.
On the flip side, the dating ban is like catnip to every man in London. She’s never had so much attention in her life. Should she risk her newly-found stability in singledom for what could be the real deal? Or will she choose the rules, rather than risk having her heart broken again? Read more…

Because employers can’t be expected to know what each and every one of their staff would like to receive as a Christmas gift, Sodexo is launching its brand new Christmas campaign ‘Everyone’s Different’. The campaign is aimed at HR and sales promotion professionals with the message that by giving multi–retailer vouchers, you’re giving the gift of choice to your staff and clients this Christmas.
The Director of Sodexo, one of the UK’s largest suppliers of incentives and rewards, says: “The corporate Christmas incentive market is worth over £400 million but I wonder how much of that is wasted on gifts that people just don’t want or need.” Kevin Harrington continues, “It’s a fact that panic and confusion sets in when employers are set with the task of choosing gifts for staff and clients. Yet, by giving someone the option of choosing a gift for themselves with a voucher, you’re not only offering choice but also giving yourself peace of mind that your gift will be appreciated!” Read more…
