Technician training for geothermal power plants in Iceland

spring_iceland74Recent developments within the technologies of geothermal power plants have lead to the expansion of technical training in Iceland to cope with the demand for technicians. The Geothermal Power Plant Technician course at the Keilir Institute of Technology is set to address the growing need for skilled geothermal power plant technicians as well as health, safety and environmental issues.

The Geothermal Power Plant Technician course at Keilir is split into two separate programs, which are then spread across two years. The first year is an Associate of Applied Science Degree (worth 60 ECTS), where students receive hands-on training in running and maintaining power plants. The second year is an Associate of Science Degree (also worth 60 ECTS), which is more focused on the academic methods and techniques used for planning daily operations, maintenance and purchasing equipment/spare parts – the combination of the two results in a total of 120 ECTS.

Birmingham City University offers master degree in teaching and learning

birmingham-city-university-logoNewly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) keen to boost their careers and classroom management skills can now enrol for the new Masters Degree in Teaching and Learning (MTL) through Teach West Midlands to undertake their course at Birmingham City University, or other consortium members starting next month.

Launched last April by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) the MTL is being delivered in the Midlands region by Teach West Midlands (TWM), a Consortium of eight West Midlands Universities, with all fees paid for by the government.

This 3 year part-time/flexible programme is currently available to Newly Qualified Teachers in National Challenge Schools or Schools facing Challenging Circumstances. Read more…

Iceland enterprise park pushes innovative education and business development

Asbru_logo12Business development, education and entrepreneurship are being greatly pushed in Iceland via the Asbru Enterprise Park, Keflavik. The Keilir: Atlantic Center of Excellence, located within the park, offers dedicated academic programs and flight training, whilst Iceland’s first data centre and other ventures such as medical tourism are also taking place at Asbru.

The Asbru Enterprise Park, in conjunction with Kadeco, is helping to combine medical advancements with medical tourism. A hospital specialising in joint replacements, weight loss surgery and other medical treatments is set to commence within the second quarter of 2010. The hospital will house around 35 beds, three operating theatres and all together have the capability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year.

Becta event demonstrates benefits of learning platforms in education

Becta - Show and Tell, Extended LearningIn a recent ‘Show & Tell’ education event initiated by Becta, the government agency for technology in education, parents and teachers came together to see the benefits and advantages of technology and learning platforms in helping children’s education and their learning process. The location for the event was at Grays Infant and Nursery School, where staff and parents were keen to share their stories on how learning platforms have changed and are continuing to change their children’s learning for the better.

The interactive event began with an introduction to Grays School’s use of technology in education in relation to its learning platform, presented by Head Teacher, Christine Terrey. Grays School is an Infant and Nursery School of 240 children situated in Newhaven East Sussex and in Easter 2008 the school started using its brand new learning platform. Read more…
