Iceland announced as top travel destination by Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet recently announced Iceland as one of its ‘Perfect Trips for 2010’, encouraging travellers to visit this summer. According to Lonely Planet’s January issue of its monthly magazine, ‘there really has never been a better time’ to visit Iceland as prices are more affordable than ever with the current exchange rate. Also, Iceland flights have resumed to normal after the ceasing of the Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption.

The global travel guide and digital media publisher recommends taking a road trip to the hot springs and pastel mountains of Landmannalaugar, a geothermal area in the southern highland and taking a boat ride around the magnificent Vestmannaeyjar islands to see thousands of puffin chicks take flight. President of Iceland to honor Jim Jarmusch at film festival in Reykjavik

Minimalist film director, Jim Jarmusch will be awarded with the 2010 RIFF Honorary Creative Award by the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, during this year’s Reykjavik International Film Festival.

The Reykjavik International Film Festival, taking place this year between September 23rd and October 3rd, has become one of Iceland’s most popular cultural events, offering both Icelandic and international film enthusiasts a wide selection of alternative and independent cinema. This year, Jim Jarmusch will be awarded with the 2010 RIFF Honorary Creative Award by the President of Iceland, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, alongside the screening of three of his films.

Iceland airport football competition plays out nicely

Iceland’s international airport in Keflavik, in coordination with the FIFA World Cup Football Championships 2010, last month launched an online competition in celebration of the event. The football competition was aimed at participants predicting the World Cup playoffs with daily prizes to be won.

The online football competition involved participants predicting the outcome for each game with correct results being awarded a pre-set amount of points in relation to the odds. The participant who then achieved the highest number of points won the game. Prizes were awarded to participants and also to fans of Keflavik Airport on Facebook. Read more…

The travel publication encourages travellers to visit the land of fire and ice, explaining that ‘there really has never been a better time’ to go. The recommendation comes from the January issue of Lonely Planet’s monthly magazine proclaiming Iceland as one of the ‘Perfect Trips for 2010’.
