Volcano pictures of Iceland eruption taken by Icelandair pilot

Iceland VolcanoAn Icelandair pilot has been publishing pictures of the Iceland volcano eruption on his own website. The recent set of volcano pictures taken by Mr. Petursson show both the first and second volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajokull from the air and the surrounding area.

Volcano information: how it is affecting Iceland

Iceland volcano, EyjafjallajokullIn Iceland, day-to-day life continues as normal with the vast majority of the country and population being unaffected by the recent volcanic eruption. Those mainly affected are farmers in the immediate area located just south of the volcano crater. This is where the majority of volcanic ash has fallen and consequently acres of farmland and this year’s crops have been damaged.

However, hundreds of volunteers have been working to assist with the cleaning up of volcanic ash and to help those affected by the eruption. The abundance of volunteers came together on Facebook with a group being made by numerous organisations such as the Icelandic Red Cross, the accident prevention association Ice-Sar and the Jeep association 4×4. The federation of women’s associations in Iceland also helped out by serving lunch at a local service centre for all the volunteers. Read more…

Keflavik International Airport reopens with Icelandair flights

icelandair34Icelandair has recently announced that scheduled flights from Glasgow will be arriving at Keflavik International Airport this afternoon, Monday 26th April, after closed last Friday due to disruptions caused by the Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Despite what many people think, the current situation in Iceland is very calm, with air traffic over Keflavik only being disrupted for a short period of time.

Normal service with Icelandair is due to resume this afternoon as scheduled flights from Glasgow are set to arrive at Iceland’s transatlantic hub in Keflavik since the temporary switch to Akureyri in the North of Iceland. Read more…

Russian President to Face Human Rights Leaders in Oslo; Kasparov, Bukovsky, Yusupova and Others to Confront Medvedev

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev arrives in Oslo this morning for an official state visit and is booked into the same hotel as a gathering of more than one hundred human rights leaders from across the world.

The Oslo Freedom Forum began today at Oslo’s Grand Hotel. At a press conference this morning, Forum president Thor Halvorssen invited President Medvedev to dialogue with conference participants: “Surely the Russian president has a packed schedule but given the odd coincidence that we are in the same city, both hosted by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, in the same hotel, and given his comments on ‘freedom being better than non-freedom’ we hope he will meet us in the lobby for a few minutes to discuss the troubling human rights record of Russia and that of his predecessor Vladimir Putin.” Read more…

Airport closure in Iceland forces Icelandair to re-route scheduled flights through Glasgow

IcelandairIcelandair flights that were scheduled to take place today and tomorrow will now be flying out of Glasgow International Airport in Scotland. The upheaval of the Icelandair flight plan is in response to the closure of Keflavik International Airport in Iceland which closed yesterday morning due to ash fall in the surrounding area from the volcano at Eyjafjallajokull. The airport is expected to be closed for another 24 hours.

Despite the closure of the Iceland’s international airport, Icelandair will be flying its transatlantic and European flights from Glasgow. Read more…
