Record numbers attend 2007 Glitnir Reykjavik Marathon

The 2007 Reykjavik Marathon, supported by Glitnir Bank, attracted over 11,300 participants to Iceland from all corners of the world.

Reykjavik (eNewsWire) 29 August 2007 – A record 11,342 runners took part in the Glitnir Reykjavik Marathon, competing in five categories including the full marathon, half marathon and 10 kilometre race.

Excellent weather on Saturday 18th August provided participants with perfect running conditions for the three main Glitnir marathons taking place in Reykjavik. Kenyan Simon Tonui won the men’s full marathon whilst Canadian Sarah Kathryn won the women’s. Olympic gold medallist, Stefano Baldini, who competed in Athens in 2004, came second in the half marathon.

Glitnir Bank, a leading Nordic financial group, sponsored the marathon again this year which saw participation increase by 10% compared to 2006. The Nordic bank classes Iceland and Norway as its two home markets but in recent years has expanded overseas to include offices in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the UK, Luxembourg, Russia, Canada and China. Glitnir is soon to open an office in New York.

Glitnir was also the main sponsor of the Copenhagen Marathon in May and will be sponsoring the Oslo Marathon taking place in Norway on September 20th. The sponsorships come on the back of marketing drives to raise the profile of the fast-growing financial group and promote Glitnir’s expertise in niche industry sectors. Glitnir Bank offers a combination of global scale industry and banking expertise in three key sectors, sustainable energy, offshore supply vessels and the seafood industry.
